About Henry (or Thomas) Rice

Henry (Thomas) Rice was born circa 1555 at of London, Middlesex, England. He married Margaret Baker, daughter of Thomas Baker and Agnes Goldhop, on 22 June 1579 at London, Middlesex, England.

Please note: Many secondary sources say he was the father of Deacon Edmund Rice. However, Edmund Rice's parents are unknown.

Several internet-based genealogical sources claim royal ancestry of Edmund and his descendants. These claims of royal ancestry with connection to Rhys ap Gruffydd (c 1508-1531) of Wales and his son William Rice (1522-1588) of Buckinghamshire are most certainly in error. All these claims of royal ancestry have been traced by Gary Boyd Roberts and others to a 1911 book By the Name of Rice written and self-published by Charles Elmer Rice of Alliance, Ohio. This book contains many errors and discrepancies and should not be relied upon as a genealogical source.

Also, please note that middle names were almost completely unknown at this place and time. This man was almost certainly named either Henry or Thomas, but not both.

Also please do not confuse with Henry Rice

Notes from Dale C. Rice

These brothers are grandsons of William ap Rice 1521-22 who is the son of Rhys ap Gruffed ap Thomas & Catherine St. John who inherited Carew Castle et al from his father, son of Sir Thomas ap Rhys of Bosworth fame, given by Henry VII to Rhsy ap Thoams after Bosworth field battle. It should be noted that the Name Fitz Urien used by the young Griffeth ap Rhys ap Gruffed ap Thomas is what caused Henry VIII to link him to the plot of the Red Hand of Scotland and Raven....a ruse to seize back the 6,000 acres and income of 21,000 pounds from the young Griffeth ap Rhys ap Gruffed born 1508 and beheaded on Tower Hill Jan 3, 1531 age 23. His Widow Catherine Howard who was younger than he later married into the BRIDGEWATER family & had only three children as recorded in Burks Perage: Griffeth ap Rhys ap Gruffed born about 1530 just prior to his father's death and two sisters Agness & Elizabeth ap Rice. There is no Thomas Rice born to Katherine Howard. Thomas Henry Rice is the son of Henry Rice of Newton son of William Rice 1522. Thomas Henry Rice born 1557-58 and his brother Henry Thomas Rice 1555 both were married to the same woman: ie Mary Baker. DNA excludes Henry Thomas Rice as father of Edmund Rice 1592 ca. No testing on Thomas Henry Rice has been discovered as of 2019.

Griffeth inherited the title of Fitz Urien and passed the title to his son Sir Walter ap Rice who did not have a son to leave the estate and title to. So it was given to the next closest male relative of Rhys ap Gruffed 1508 who is William ap Rhys 1521-22 who is not a son of Sir Walter Rice. Sir Walters only daughter Mary Ap Rhys married into the Captain Button Family and thus the title of FitzUrien ended up in the family of Sir Henry Rice of Newton the son of William ap Rice 1521-22. DCR (The cousin or 1/2 Brother of Griffeth ap Rhys is William Rice 1522 is the son currently listed of Joan Otter and Robert / John Rice). PS: The writer visited in person with the 8th cousin and downline daughter of Elizabeth Frost Rice-Whale in Sept of 2018 DCR
