The death of Mr. Henry Sylvester Samuel was also very sad: -He was a well-known commercial worker, had married a Beddington, emigrated from Liverpool to London and became an " orthodox " reformer and a pillar of such varied institutions as the Anglo-Jewish Association, the Board of Guardians and the Jews' Hospital. He had been for some years a member of the committee of the Charing Cross Hospital, but, apart from this, had not been, often identified with non-Jewish matters. But he was at the point of entering public life: at 55, and was a candidate for the County Council. His death on the eve of the election raised a curious point in law; The moderates of Central Hackney applied-to the court to postpone the election till such time as another candidate might be chosen by their party to replace him. The judge acceded to their request so as not to practically disfranchise the applicants. Mr. Samuel's kinsman, Mr. H. Leopold Beddington, at whose funeral he caught the chill at which after a few days proved fatal, was a most lovable, charitable, unassuming friend, and he, too, will be greatly missed.
