Summary via obituary in the Camden Times of Camden Arkansas, Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Thursday, Oct. 1, 1936:

H.S. Spivey died Tuesday: Well-known Arkansas man to be buried Thursday:

Little Rock, Sept. 30 (Special) - Henry Speight Spivey, 78, of 2400 Gaines Street, for the past year an employee of the state revenue department, died at a hospital here at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, after a two-week illness.

For a half-century, Mr. Spivey was a traveling salesman and his acquaintance was statewide. He is said to have known personally more Scottish Rite Masons than any other Arkansan, having been class director of the Little Rock Consistory for 30 years during which he never missed a meeting.

The honorary 33rd degree, highest honor which may be given by the Scottish Rite Masons, was conferred on him in 1915 (listed in Oct. 21 edition of the Washington Post). He was a past potentate of Al Amin Shrine temple and had been active for many years in all Masonic activities.

Mr. Spivey, whose father had been a major [sic] in the Confederate army, was born in Dardanelle in 1858 [sic]. When he was seven [sic], his father died and thereafter he lived with relatives in Washington County. In 1861 [sic], he married Miss Jennie Harrell of Washington County and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary two years before her death in 1933.

After serving the Fayetteville Grocer Company as a traveling salesman, he became associated with the Beal-Doyle Dry Good Company in a similar capacity and for many years also was a vice president of the concern. Following the liquidation of the latter company, Mr. Spivey became a representative of the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance company.

He was one of the organizers of the Arkansas Travelers and was president of the group for several years. He also was active in the United Commercial Travelers and served on that organization's executive council.

Governor Futrell appointed Mr. Spivey to serve as acting county and probate clerk in 1938, and he served several months in that office.

Surviving Mr. Spivey are

  • his daughter, Miss Eula Spivey, of Little Rock;
  • a sister, Mrs. Alec Ellis of Independence, Kansas;
  • and several nieces and nephews.

The body will be removed from the home to Albert Pike Memorial temple at 1 p.m. Thursday, and will be in state there until 3 p.m. when Rose Croix services will be conducted. Pallbearers will be:

  • W.R. Gamble,
  • G. L. Turner,
  • C. Eugene Smith, Jr.,
  • J. G. Burlingame,
  • Robert M. Williams,
  • W. N. Haley,
  • John E. Parsons of Bauxite, and

Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park by F. H. Ruebel & Co.

According to the 1870 census, he and his sister Martha Jane were living with their grandmother, Mary Park Parks, and uncles Samuel and Harvey Parks, along with an M. Davis (female). Mary Elizabeth, then about age 15, was not living in the same house.

In June 1890, he was apparently in Justin, Denton County, Texas, while his wife remained in Cincinnati, Washington County, Arkansas. The letter that indicates this shows that the two were fighting at the time.
