About Henry Butt Thompson, Jr.
3/8 Choctaw #165 on Mt Tabor Indian Roll
===================================================================
Henry Thompson was polygamous. As was his brother Archibald, who also married a Jackson the relative of Percilla. Both were thought to be full blood Choctaws. Following Elizabeths death Archibald married a full blood Caddo named Nancy Islea, then two years later he married his first cousin Anna Strong Thompson who was 1/8 Lumbee. Henry's other full brother William, married a 1/8 blood Choctaw woman named Elizabeth Jones Mangum the great granddaughter of Nashoba whose English name was Samuel or Jim Jones. Henry was believed to have remained in the east after the Choctaw removal. However, in the Asbury Cemetery in Smith County, Texas, a few feet from where his brother Archibald is buried, there is a very old grave of piled rocks with the inscription HB Thompson. No other family member, other than his father had those initials. It is believed that his birth name was John (or George according to Mrs. Eddie Albright of Cleveland, Texas) and that he took the name Henry Butt Thompson after his fathers death, so that he might be accepted better in Alabama society. His father had two other sons named John, one from each wife. Henry remained with Percilla in Alabama until his death. Some sources state he was in Pontotoc County before removal and others state he was in Texas early but left to remain in Alabama. His brother Archibald settled in Texas near the Mount Tabor Indian Community where he remained until his death in 1857. Henry's brother William, after spending time in Texas, relocated to the Choctaw Nation at Doaksville, where he died in the fall of 1840. This was following the murder of eleven Choctaws by whites near Attoyac Bayou earlier in 1840.
Slaves owned by Henry B. Thompson Jr.: Charles, Ann, Suzy, Rachel, Bob, Wesley, Jim, Luke, Greene, Lewis, Lizzy, Ellen
NOTE: In the will of Alexander Thompson, son of Henry Sr. by Frances Nicholas, he does not mention any of his Choctaw half brothers, Henry Jr., Archibald or William by his father Henry's second wife Margaret McCoy. He does mention his father and step-mother as well as his full and half siblings by Henry's third wife Flora McLean. This seeming to indicate a racial divide between the legitamate white Thompson children and the Choctaw-Chickasaw children of Margaret McCoy who was married to Henry by Choctaw custom only. Margaret was a cousin of Henry Sr. through the McCoy/Butt/Etheridge lines through her mothers (Sally McCoy) paternal lineage.
