Henry's first wife was Eliza Whales who was born in 1822 in Ramsbury, England. Henry had an older brother, Joseph Watts, born 24 Jan 1810, in the parish of Shellbaurne County, Wilshire, England. These two Watts brothers, Henry and Joseph, emigrated from England to America. They came to Utah in 1857 with the Elder Ellsworth Company. Joseph, driving an ox team; Henry and wife Eliza pulling a handcart, all the way across the plains. They endured many hardships, hunger mostly as they were put on half rations most of the way.

After living in Salt Lake City, Utah four years, Joseph met and married Helen Livingston on 1 Feb 1859. The two brothers and their wives came to Smithfield, Cache, Utah May 1, 1860. They took up residency in the Fort in Smithfield.
