Henry L Woodruff, prominent and widely known citizen and retired business man, died Saturday morning at 2:30 o'clock of pneumonia. he underwent an operation at the city hospital for appendicitis on Wednesday and pneumonia later developed, proving fatal at the time named.
Mr. Woodruff, who was in his seventieth year, had lived in Columbus practically all his life and took an active interest in business and civic matters. He founded the Columbus Ice and Cold Storage company, of which he was for some time president and which later was absorbed by the Atlantic Ice and Coal company. He was a stockholder in the latter concern and many other big corporations.
Prominent Mill Man
Mr. Woodruff was for about thirty-three years president and general manager of the Empire Mills, retiring from his official connection with that company in 1902. He succeeded his father, the late Colonel G W Woodruff, as head of the Empire Mills a few years after the close of the War Between the States.
In addition to his business interests, Mr. Woodruff was an active church and civic worker. For a number of years he was chairman of the police commission of Columbus and was very efficient as head of that board, being a conscientious and faithful official. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church and formerly a member of the Masons, the Elks and Odd Fellows. Mr. Woodruff owned a large farm in Alabama as well as other farming interests, and since his retirement from active business duties a few years ago, he devoted considerable time to the interest of his farms when his health permitted.
Mr. Woodruff was born in Juniper, Ga. on May 20, 1851, and moved to Columbus with his parents when a small child. In October, 1865 he was married to Miss Mary Kyle of Talbotton. He was widely known throughout this section of the state, being a member of one of the most prominent families in Georgia.
Surviving are his widow and three sons, James W., Harry E and George C. Woodruff; one daughter, Mrs. Clifford J Swift, of Columbus; a brother, Ernest Woodruff, and a sister, Mrs. Joel Hurt, of Atlanta, and seven grandchildren. all of whom have the sympathy of their many friends.
