About Henry de La Rieux

According to homepage.mac.com

Henry de la Rieux's father: Francis I King of France (an alleged, illegitimate son)

Henry de la Rieux's mother: (daughter of Marquis) de la Rieux

To be investigated further: "The daughter of Marques de la Rieux is the mother of Henri fathered by a very young Frances l when he was Count of Angouleme and heir presumptive to his uncle the King of France, Louis XII. I am not sure who the Marques de la Rieux was or the name of the daughter who was older than Frances. Jean de la Rieux was Marshall of France and his son Pierre was Marshall of France and one Joan of Arc’s military commanders. I think our Miss de la Rieux was a decendant from this family. Jean de la Rieux was responsible for the arrangement of marriage for Anne of Brittany, Queen to Louis XII and the mother of Claude of France who married Frances l. Frances l did not marry Miss de la Rieux but married the King’s daughter Claude and then became King of France. Henri was well taken care of and had a Chateau in Orleans in the providence of Louis that was inherited by his sons. After the 1573 Massacre of St. Bartholomew our ancestor Bertolet, Henri’s son fled to safety in the Rhine valley of Germany. Changing his name to Le Roux. The earliest mention of the de la Rieux is from the tapestries of Bayeux, possible ancestors of Rollo the Dane and his wife Poppa."

Henri de la Rue is thought to be the alleged out-of-wedlock issue of François I de Valois, King of France, and Daughter de la Rue. But the validity of François I as his father is under fire, as François would have been 8 years old at the time of Henri's birth.

If there is any validity or connection to a royal father, it would have most likely have been Louis XII of France. Louis XII was born 27 June 1462. He died 1 January 1515 at the age of 52.

In 1476, Louis XI forced Louis (his second cousin) to marry his daughter Joan of France. The son of Louis XI, Charles VIII, succeeded to the throne of France in 1483, but died childless in 1498, whereupon the throne passed to Louis XII. Charles had been married to Anne, Duchess of Brittany in order to unite the quasi-sovereign Duchy of Brittany with the Kingdom of France. To sustain this union, Louis XII had his marriage to Joan annulled (December 1498) after he became king so that he could marry Charles VIII's widow, Anne of Brittany.

During the marriage Anne was pregnant nine times.

Louis XII had an illegitimate son, Michel Bucy, Archbishop of Bourges, born 1485 or 1489, died 11 Feb. 1511. The only reference to his mother is that she was " a woman of the people".

Given Henri's year of birth, 1502, Louis XII would seem more a likely candidate for a royal father.
