About Hensel Cotman Eppard

Hnsel C. Eppard, 81, of Elkton, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 20, 2008, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 26, 1927, in Elkton, a son of Marvin and Maude (Meadows) Eppard.

Mr. Eppard retired from General Electric Co. of Waynesboro after 32 years of service as a maintenance mechanic. He also owned and operated North 340 Welding Shop in Crimora for over 25 years.

He had a love for many things in life, but first and foremost was God, his family and friends. Throughout his many activities and achievements in life, he thoroughly enjoyed the sport of horseshoe pitching. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995, serving two years thereafter as Chairman of the Committee. He was an Air Force veteran and a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church of Elkton.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Anna Lee Shifflett Eppard, and 14 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Laura Pearl Eppard, and three children, Garry Eppard and his wife, Ruby, of Sumter, S.C., Steve Eppard and his wife, Brenda, of Waynesboro, and Kathy Henkel and her husband, Charles, of Waynesboro; five grandchildren, Tara Eppard, Troy Eppard, Cindy Morris, Kristy Henkel and Erik Henkel; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon and Brianna Eppard and McKenzie Morris. In addition, he is survived by two sisters, Beatrice Cantwell of Baltimore, Md., and Florine Hensley of Stephens City, Va.; three stepchildren, Ronnie Eppard and his wife, Sue, Donnie Eppard and his wife, Linda, and Norman Eppard Jr., all of Elkton. Also, many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at the EUM Church of Elkton by the Rev. Lurty "Dickie" Campbell Jr., the Rev. Patricia Riggs and the Rev. Nona Allen. Burial will follow in Elk Run Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Troy Eppard, Erik Henkel, Dewey Shawn Morris, Leon Ray Shifflett, Bob Suddarth, Milford Hartman, Elwood Eppard and Hollis Cantwell Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Strickler, Jim Davis, Gene Wilt, Bernard Meadows, Malcolm Meadows, Floyd Draper and the Junior Ouam of Elkton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the EUM Church of Elkton or the Elkton Volunteer Rescue Squad.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
