Herbert Spencer Dormitzer, of Woodbury, the son of Henry and Anna (Essroger) Dormitzer, was born in Hoboken, N.J., February 12, 1865. He attended schools in Hoboken and New York, and graduated from Columbia College in the class of 1885, where he received his A. B. at the age of twenty. In August. 1885, he entered, as stock clerk, the employ of Wiebush & Hilger, of New York, importers and sole agents of foreign and domestic cutlery and hardware. In 1889 he began his career as salesman, and in 1893 was also cutlery buyer, traveling over the entire United States, England, France and Germany. In 1898 he became treasurer of the company, and at the same time was elected vice-president of the Challenge Cutlery Corporation of Bridgeport, which positions he held until he sold out his interests in both companies in 1902. Mr. Dormitzer then purchased a controlling interest in the American Shear and Knife Co.. of Hotchkissville, of which he is now president and treasurer. On May 11, 1907, he married Margaret C. Daniels. They have one son, Henry Herbert, born April 10, 1909. He has been secretary and treasurer of the Wholesale Pocket Knive Manufacturers Association since 1906, and is also a member of the tariff committee. Mr. Dormitzer is a Master Mason, having been raised in the Adelphic Lodge of New York, in 1897. He was ranking member of the Committee on Finance.
