About Herman Gelb
The Survivors' Registry maintained by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington ("USHMM") establishes that Herman Gelb survived the Shoah. He immigrated to the US in 1959 and passed away in Brooklyn, NY on April 1, 2003. The information Mr. Gelb personally provided to USHMM is summarized below and the referenced documents can be found in the USHMM's archives:
Herman Gelb was born on June 25, 1908 in Tiszaloek, Hungary. His father was Samuel Gelb and his mother was Hanni Gelb, maiden name Blaugrund.
He wrote to the Red Cross as part of a compensation claim process in 1968 when he was living at 1466 49th St. in Brooklyn. He asked the Red Cross to request documents, but none could be located so his compensation claim was probably denied at that time.
Herman was a Tapezierer (an Upholsterer/wallpaper hanger) and was in several places working in the Hungarian Labor Battalions during the war. He ended up in Mauthausen (a concentration camp) where he was liberated. He went to Budapest after the war. In 1957, he left Europe travelling from Milan to Zurich to London and leaving April 14, 1959 for New York on board the Queen Elizabeth.
Herman's wife in 1968 (when he filled out the compensation claim-related documents) was Rosalia Gelb; her maiden name was Burger. He had 2 children.
