About Herman Heller
Herman and his family left Konigswart in the summer of 1854 and by December 1854 had joined his brothers in Woodstock, VA, where he worked with them in their mercantile establishment. Herman appeared in Shenandoah County Court, 10 January 1855 and declared his intent to become a citizen of the United States. He bought a house and lot in Woodstock, February 1855. In 1859 he moved to the village of Edom in Rockingham County, Virginia, where he established a store and became the postmaster in 1860. After the war broke out he and his family moved into the town of Harrisonburg where he opened a store. His store was not connected with the store of his brothers Moritz and Adolph, but was called "H. Heller and Co." (From Jack Heller): The two Heller brothers Moritz and Herman and a Lowenbach cousin had a store in Harrisonburg, Virginia. There, they sold provisions to the Confederate army - their business receipts are in a collection at the National Archives.
