Houghton County Mine Inspectors Report 1905

ACCIDENT NO. 53— July 26th, 1905. — Arvo Koppelo was killed in No. 5 shaft, 5th level, Baltic Mine, by the explosion of a box of percussion caps. He was placing a cap on the fuse when some of the fire from his lamp fell into the open box, the result was an explosion.

An inquest held by Justice of the Peace T. E. Mitchell.

Evert Mantyla testified: "I work in the Baltic Mine, 5th level, No. 5 shaft. I was out to the shaft and Arvo Koppelo came out to the shaft and took some fuse from the powder box and also took a box of caps. I was there when the explosion took place and saw the flash, but don't know where the fire came from."

John Juusola testified: "I was working inside the drift when the accident happened. I saw Koppelo lying down and he wanted help. I asked him how he got hurt. He said he had a box of caps in one hand and a cap in the other hand. He was putting fuse in the cap and fire fell from his lamp into the cap box and the box of caps exploded. There were about ninety caps in the box."

Verdict: "We, the jury, upon our oaths do say that the deceased, Arvo Koppelo, came to his death through the premature explosion of a box of blasting caps at the 5th level of No. 5 shaft, Baltic Mine, July 26th, 1905."

Herman Kauppila, aged about 24 years, single, a Finnish miner, was killed in the No. 5 shaft of the Baltic mine, yesterday morning by a blasting cap exploding in his hand. He came to this country from Finland and spent a few months at the Baltic mine. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Finnish Atlantic church. Burial will be at the Atlantic cemetery.

Onnettomuus nro 53 — 26. heinäkuuta 1905 — Arvo Koppelo sai surmansa Baltic Mine -kaivoksen kuilun nro 5 tasolla 5, kun laatikollinen nalleja ("percussion caps") räjähti. Hän oli laittamassa nallia tulilankaan, kun hänen otsalampustaan putosi palava liekki avoimeen nallilaatikkoon, ja seurauksena oli räjähdys.

Tapaturmatutkintaa johti rauhantuomari T. E. Mitchell.

Evert Mantyla todisti: "Työskentelen Baltic Mine -kaivoksessa, 5:nnellä tasolla kuilussa nro 5. Olin kuilun luona ja Arvo Koppelo tuli sinne kuilulle, ja otti ruutilaatikosta tulilankaa ("fuse") ja otti mysö laatikollisen nalleja. Olin siellä räjähdyksen sattuessa ja näin sen välähdyksen, mutten tiedä mistä se tuli oli peräisin."

John Juusola todisti: "Olin työssä rintauksella ("inside the drift") kun onnettomuus tapahtui. Näin Koppelon makaamassa maassa ja hän pyysi apua. Kysyin miten hän oli loukkaantunut. Hän sanoi, että hänellä oli laatikollinen nalleja toisessa kädessään ja yksi nalli toisessa kädessä. Hän oli liittämässä tulilankaa nalliin kun hänen lampustaan putosi palavaa siihen nallilaatikkoon ja se laatikollinen nalleja räjähti. Laatikossa oli noin 90 nallia."

Päätös: "Me valamiehet valaehtoisesti toteamme, että menehtynyt Arvo Koppelo sai surmansa 26. heinäkuuta 1905, kun laatikollinen nalleja räjähti ennenaikaisesti Baltic Mine -kaivoksen kuilun nro 5 tasolla 5."

Herman Kauppila, iältään noin 24-vuotias,naimaton suomalainen kaivosmies sai surmansa eilen aamulla Baltic-kaivoksen kuilussa nro 5 nallin räjähtäessä hänen kädessään. Hän tuli tähän maahan Suomesta ja ehti olla muutaman kuukauden töissä Baltic-kaivoksessa. Siunaustilaisuus pidetään huomenna Finnish Atlantic -kirkossa. Hautaaminen Atlantic cemetery -hautausmaalle.
