Herman H. Ninteman

The youngest child of Herman Henry Ninteman and Anna Margaretha "Margaret" Vecht, "Harm" was born on the family farm in Calhoun County, Illinois. He was baptized "Hermann Nintemann" on 21 Oct 1869 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brussels. [Please see important notes below.]

Harm's father died when he was a young boy, and his mother married Henry Bove in 1877. Henry was a farmer in Calhoun County.

After his step-father, Henry, died in 1899, Harm continued to run the farm in Calhoun County with his mother until her death in 1916.

By 1930, Harm moved to Jersey County, Illinois. He lived there with the family of his brother, Henry Ninteman.

At the time of his death, Harm was 79 years, 5 months and 12 days old.

Important notes:

Harm's date of birth was reported by some family members to be 16 Oct 1872. It does appear that he may have used this birthdate later in life, but it was not correct. He also seems to have used the name "Harmon" at times.

Birth records at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brussels clearly give his birth date as 18 Oct 1869. (Copy of the original birth record has been added to the photo section of this memorial.)

He was listed on the 1870 United States Census as being 8 months old when the census was taken on the 14th and 15th of June in 1870. The census specifically noted that "Herrmann Nindman" had been born in October of 1869. He was listed as 10-years-old on the 1880 census, which would be correct if he were born in October of 1869.

There is also some question as to his actual given name. Harm's birth/baptismal record at St. Mary's Catholic Church gives his name as "Hermann Nintemann." His church death record spells it "Herman Ninteman." (Copy of the original death record has been added to the photo section of this memorial.)

While Harm's name was recorded on many records as Herman, other documents have the name with the Harmon spelling. Relatives report that he was known as "Uncle Harm."

Additionally, it should be noted that his surname is misspelled on some records as Ninterman.

There is no readable marker for Harm's grave.
