ACCIDENT NO. 24— February 28th.— Premature explosion of a blast occurred in the slope shaft at the 57th level of the Red Jacket Branch of the Calumet and Hecla Mine, resulting in the death of Herman Onka and injured Louis Kieri, Allan Campbell and Oscar Halinen.

An inquest was held before Justice Jackola.

Louis Kiere testified: "I work in the Red Jacket shaft of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company. Knew Herman Onka. Was working with him on the day of the accident. We had fourteen holes to blast in two rounds. The first round went all right. We then got ready for the second round. We charged the holes, split the fuse and put a snoff to the fuse. We started to go away, and when about thirty feet away we intended to get into a car and get up. The first hole went off before I got to the car and I was knocked unconscious, and I believe the same blast killed Herman Onka."

Oscar Halinen testified: "I work for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company in the Red Jacket shaft branch. Was working with the same party as deceased. We fired our holes in the usual manner. Have worked in Tamarack and other mines and the same manner of blasting as we were doing at the time of the accident. I was injured myself and cannot tell how far from the car deceased was, but think about seven or eight feet."

Verdict: "We find that the deceased, Herman Onka came to his death on the 28th day of February, 1905, at the 57th level of slope shaft of Red Jacket shaft of Calumet and Hecla Mine, by a premature blast."

DIED-Herman ONKA was killed and Allen CAMPBELL, Albert NICHOLS, and Oscar ALTANEN were seriously injured due to a premature blast in the Red Jacket mine shaft, yesterday afternoon. The men were working together, and in some way the hole they were charging exploded before they could get out of the way. ONKA was killed outright, he was 40 years old and resided at the Red Jacket mine location. He is survived by a wife and five children. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at the Finnish church on 8th Street, Calumet. Burial will be at Lake View cemetery, Calumet.

Onnettomuus nro 24 — 28. helmikuuta.— Ennenaikainen räjähdys tapahtui rintauksessa Calumet & Hecla -yhtiön Red Jacket -kaivoksem tasolla 57, jolloin surmansa sai Herman Onka ja loukkaantui Louis Kieri, Allan Campbell ja Oscar Halinen.

Kuolemansyyn tutkintaa johti tuomari Jackola.

Louis Kiere todisti: "Työskentelen Calumet and Hecla Mining Company:n Red Jacket -kuilussa. Tunsin miehen Herman Onka. Olin työskentelemässä hänen kanssaan tapaturmapäivänä. Meillä oli 14 reikää räjäytettävänä kahdessa erässä. Ensimmäinen erä meni hyvin. Me valmistauduimme sitten toiseen erään. Panostimme reiät, halkaisimme ("split") sytyslangan ja laitoimme siihen nuuskaa ("snoff"). Lähdimme poistumaan paikalta, ja noin 30 jalan (9 m) päässä meidän piti kavuta vaunuun ja nousta ylös. Ensimmäinen reikä räjähti ennen kuin pääsin vaunulle asti ja se löy minut tajuttomaksi. Luulen että samassa rjähdyksessä Herman Onka kuoli."

Oscar Halinen todisti: "Työskentelen Calumet and Hecla Mining Company:n Red Jacket -kuilussa. Olin samassa työryhmässä kuin menehtynyt. Sytytimme reiät tavanomaiseen tapaan. Olen työskennellyt Tamarack:issa ja muissa kaivoksissa, ja niissä on samat toimintatavat räjäytyksissä kuin mitä meillä oli onnettomuuden tapahtuessa. Loukkaannuin itsekin enkä osaa sanoa kuinka kaukana vaunusta menehtynyt oli, mutta arvioisin noin 7-8 jalkaa (2,5 m)."

Päätös: "Me toteamme, että menehtynyt Herman Onka kuoli 28.2.1905 Calumet and Hecla Mine-yhtiön Red Jacket -kaivoksen tasolla 57 sattuneessa ennenaikaisessa räjähdyksessä."

Kuolleita - Herman ONKA sai surmansa ja Allen CAMPBELL, Albert NICHOLS ja Oscar ALTANEN loukkaantuiva vakavasri Red Jacket kaivoskuilussa eilen iltapäivällä tapahtuneessa ennenaikaisessa räjähdyksessä. Miehet työskentelivät yhdessä, ja jostakin syystä heidän panostamansa reikä räjähti ennen kuin he ehtivät suojaan. ONKA huoli heti, hän oli 40-vuotias ja asui Red Jacket -kaivoksen alueella. Häneltä jäi vaimo ja viisi lasta. Siunaustilaisuus pidetään sunnuntaina iltapäivällä Suomalaisessa kirkossa, 8th Street, Calumet. Hautaus tapahtuu Lake View -hautausmaalle Calumetissa.
