About Hermann Diels

Philologist and philosophy historian. He is important mainly because of three projects: the "Doxographi Graeci" (1879), an edition of secondary literature from antiquity about philosophers and their teachings (Diogenes Laertios etc), the "Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca" (1882–1909), an edition of all known comments on Aristotle from Antiquity, a project in which he served as director and "Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker" (1903), a collection of the surviving fragments of pre-socratic/non-socratic greek philosophers (mostly from citations in works of other philosophers).
