About Hezekiah Charles Ullman
Hezekiah Charles Ullman, a Jew, was born in Berrysburg, Pennsylvania but grew up in Williamsport. He was a Union Army Captain in the Civil War in the 5th Pennsylvania Reserves and afterwards practiced law in Philadelphia, New York City, and Denver.
Ullman married Ella Adelaide Marsh and had two sons; Robert Payne Ullman and Douglas Elton Thomas Ullman who is best known by his stage name, Douglas Fairbanks.
In about 1881, Ullman purchased several mining interests in the Rocky Mountains and moved the family to Denver, where he re-established his law practice. Ullman abandoned the family when Douglas was five years old, and he and Robert were brought up by their mother, who gave them the family name Fairbanks, after her first husband.
Ullman allegedly converted to Presbyterianism later in his life.
