Paul Bird - 13/7/08, from an email to my Father

I have once again taken up the case of George Bernard Hardy. I still have

all my notes from 1992 and these are proving useful. He was born in Hackney

in 1878, went to Cambridge. In the 1901 census he is listed as a boarder in

Cambridge but the college is not named. He obtained a BA in 1901 and then

went on to his first curacy(?) in the parish of Springfield in Chelmsford,

under the diocese of St Albans.

In 1902 Crockford's Clerical Directory he is so listed, as above. Now it is

interesting that this was the year of your Mother's birth and so it may have

been at this point he got involved with Aunt Louise, I have a note that Aunt

L. moved from Wolverhampton to Upminster then on to Grays but not which

year. I do not know which year she first became aware of your Mother as a

potential adoptee.

1907 saw his marriage at Henley to Hilda Mary Hill, so that was following

his Springfield curacy indeed one might presume it to be a celebration of

the completion of it. Certainly by the time of his marriage he was at

Bedford.

In 1925 Crockford's GBH is listed as Wyndham Square, Plymouth in other words

by then he'd moved on, his Essex listings from the same entry are Curate of

Springfield Essex 1901 - 06, St Paul w all SS, Bedford 1906 - 13; St Sav St

Alb 1913 - 15. Now for the period during which your Mother is supposed to

have been removed from an orphange by Aunt Lou GBH was in Bedford, and I

wonder where Aunt Lou took Esther anyway? Did she take her to live in

Wolverhampton, or Essex?

What follows below may be completely unrelated to her but it's a first attempt before the m. cert arrives, after all they did marry at Henley so she may well have been from Caversham, six miles as the crow flies.
