About Hilda Kusserow

Hilda Kusserow was a Polish-born German teacher and artist best known for being the matriarch of the Kusserows, a large family of Jehovah's Witnesses persecuted during the Holocaust for their beliefs.

After being arrested and jailed for her ministerial work in March 1936, Hilda had her youngest children taken from her and sent to Nazi households to be forcibly reeducated. In the early 1940s, Hilda's husband and older children were all executed or imprisoned.

Following another prison term of her own, after which she refused to sign an oath of allegiance to Hitler required for her relewse, Hilda was sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp in August 1943. She was reunited there with two of her daughters and ultimately liberated by the Soviets while on the April 1945 death march.

Per daughter Magdalena, Hilda and her husband returned to their ministerial work on the first Sunday following Hilda's return to Bad Lippspringe in September 1945.
