Hilda Marie Smith

Mrs. Hilda Marie (Shaff) Smith, 100, died on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Frederick Memorial Hospital from a blood clot in her leg. Born in Feagaville, Maryland on November 23, 1914, she was the daughter of the late James Victor and Phoebe Julia (Stockman) Shaff and was the oldest of six siblings.

She graduated from Frederick High School in 1932 and received many certificates and awards for her typing skills. She became a secretary for the City of Frederick upon graduation.

Hilda married G. Richard Smith and moved to Jefferson, Maryland, where they resided for many years. Known for her wonderful cooking and baking, she served as Cafeteria Manager for many years at both the Old Jefferson School and the new Valley School in Jefferson. "Miss Hilda" had her recipes published in the Frederick County Schools Cookbook and always encouraged her Jefferson school children to eat their vegetables.

She was a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jefferson, an active member of the Jefferson Women's Club for many years, and a faithful worker at the Jefferson Fire Co. Carnivals and suppers. She was the first person in Frederick County to receive a social security card.

In addition to her parents, Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, daughter, Barbara Smith Rippeon, sister, Clara Pletsch and husband Howard and brothers, Richard Shaff and James V. Shaff, Jr.

She is survived by her devoted family, son-in-law, Kenneth Rippeon, granddaughter, Karin Rippeon Kidd and husband Jeff, with whom Hilda had been with prior to her hospitalization, grandson, Kenneth Rippeon II and wife Becky, great-grandson, Zachary Wathen, who helped care for his great-grandmother, great-granddaughter, Jordan Wathen, Lauren Rippeon and Allison Rippeon, sister, Julia "Babe" Shaff Culler, brother, Bernard Shaff and wife Dorothy, sister-in-law, Ruby Shaff, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8pm, on Friday, October 2, 2015, at the Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. The funeral service will be held at 11:00AM, on Saturday, October 3, 2015, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel at the funeral home. Pastor Katrina Holland will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Jefferson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Hilda's name to, St. Paul Lutheran Church, 3864 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, Maryland 21755.
