About Hilja Prooso
Hilja Olivia Rissanen was the daughter of Olli Rissanen and Ida Mustonen. Hilja was born in Kontiolahti, Northern Karelia, Finland on March 10, 1903. She brought up her sister's son, my grandfather, her nephew, when he was shipped to Finland after his father died. Between 1929 to 1935. Hilja brought my grandfather Edwin, back to the United States in October 1935. Edwin ran away right before leaving Finland, Hilja had to find Edwin because he did not want to leave Finland, Edwin tried to runaway again right before he and Hilja boarded the ship to America. Hilja visited Finland a few times, in 1944 and 1952. (( Name: Hilja Prooso, Arrival Date: 24 Aug 1952, Birth Date: abt 1904, Age: 48, Gender: Female, Port of Departure: Gothenburg, Sweden. Port of Arrival: New York, New York. Ship Name: Stockholm.)) Hilja and her sister Fiina were the only Rissanen siblings to come to America. My Aunt remembers meeting her a few time. Hilja died on October 28, 1955, in the Bronx in New York. Hilja Married Ernst Prooso 1904-1980, they had no children. She was survived by her husband, and 2 brothers and 2 sisters in Finland, and a lot of Nieces and Nephews. Hilja's ashes are in the Rissanen family grave in Finland. RIP Hilja. Hilja is my Great Great Aunt.
