About Homer DeLois Sweet
He was a telegrapher; an engineer; made and corrected many maps of parts of the state of New York; was employed to oversee the building of the Syracuse reservoir for the water works; also to plan and build the stone bridge at Onondaga. He traveled extensively in Europe; was the author of Twilight Hours in the Adirondacks and Philosophy of English Versification.
For many years and until his death, he was the secretary of the Onondaga Historical Association. He was the compiler of The Averys of Groton, a work of great importance and requiring an immense amount of work; he was thirty years in collecting material for it. During the active preparation of the book he was an invalid; when all of the book, except the preface and the appendix, was in type, he died, November 16, 1893, at Syracuse. The Groton Avery clan owes much to the services of Homer D. L. Sweet. After his death, all of the genealogical material that he had collected was sent to Elroy M. Avery (No. 3112). That material and his work made possible this second edition of the family history, The Groton Avery Clan.
THE GROTON AVERY CLAN, Vol. I, by Elroy McKendree Avery and Catherine Hitchcock (Tilden) Avery, Cleveland, 1912. p. 596-8
