About Hon. David Maclay

Hon. David McClay

In 1851, he was elected a member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature, and he was re-elected in 1852. The bill of greatest importance brought up during his term of service was the main liquor law. He rigourously advocated for his strong temporance principles, although he knew that his support of the bill meant political death. Another bill ajudicated at the time was the divorce bill, which he strongly opposed. On the expiration of this term on the legislature, he declined further political nominations, preferring to follow the pursuits of agriculture on the old homestead.

In politics, he was a "Whig" and upon the formation of the Republican party, he became a staunch supporter of it's principles. He was buried in Aug 1901 at Lower Middle Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He died on 1 Aug 1901. He was a merchant from 1859 to 1878 in Academia, Juniata Co., Pennsylvania. He went to Academia and associated with Joseph Pomeroy in the merchantile business until until 1878, when he retired. He was Presbyterian in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. After retiring from the mercantile business, he made his home with his brother, Dr. Charles Templeton McClay, in Greenvillage, Franklin County.

He never married.

On the death of his father, he purchased the old family homestead and took charge of the mill.
