"... subsequent research by Donald Lines Jacobus, Herbert Seversmith, Henry Hoff and Effingham Humphrey has proven that the book got the wives of the first three Richard Woodhulls all wrong.

The first one's wife was named Dorothy, not Deborah. Effingham Humphrey has presented good reason to believe she was Dorothy, d/o Edward and Frances Howell ["Dorothie Howell Rediviva", TAG, 1979, 55:178-81].

Henry Hoff's article "The Descendants of Richard Howell" [The Genealogist, Fall 1981, 2/2: 197-227] cites Southampton Town Records, vol. 2, p. 242, to prove Richard Woodhull Jr. married Temperance Topping.

Richard Woodhull (2) was born October 9, 1649. He also was chosen magistrate of his native town, and was equally faithful to civil and religious interests of the people. From the records we learn that at a town meeting, April 10, 1697, it was fully agreed that Mr. Justice Woodhull, of Brookhaven, and Justice Smith, of Smithtown, should jointly make arrangements with the Rev. George Phillips faithfully to perform the duty of minister of the gospel among them during the time of his natural life, etc. At another time it was ordained that one hundred acres of land be laid out for Rev. George Phillips by Richard Woodhull, surveyor.

Several other land transactions between the town of Brookhaven and Richard are also recorded. The earliest of these I presume to be with the elder immigrant Richard, the later with his son.)
