The Bleecker family Bible record calls him "Ruthger" at his birth, which happened "...about 2 o'clock in the afternoon..." Rutger was a fur trader and it is said he amassed a fortune. Rutger shipped furs down the Hudson to New York City for export to Europe. Like his father, he was served as Albany's Recorder (1725) and then was the 15th mayor of Albany (1726-1729). He is also listed a Commissioner of Indian Affairs several times. He was also the "Judge" Rutger Bleecker who "pronounced laws from the bench of Common Pleas 1726-1733." That position is called one of the most important in Colonial Albany times as it was written that "The Mayor, Alderman and Recorder shall be judged and keeper of the Peace..." (Governor Thomas Dongan, 27 July 1686). Their marriage record reads 'with license, Rutgher Bleeker and Catalina Schuyler, wid. of Jan Abeel.' Rutger is listed as a freeholder living in the Third Ward for Albany's 1720 Census. His father and two of his brothers were all living in the Second Ward in that list. His will (NY County Court House, Liber 20 pp.228-230) was probated 27 September 1756 and proved 28 April 1757. (http://www.nysm.nysed.gov/albany/wills/willrjbleecker227.html)
