Howard J Conkling

Howard J. Conkling, son of Morris and Henrietta Conkling. He was born 9 January 1884 in Grant, Herkimer Co., NY and died 5 April 1951 in Utica, Oneida Co., NY. Jennie probably met Howard when he began, at a very young age, teaching school in Morehouseville. In 1904 and 1905 he boarded with the Remonda family while employed as the teacher in school district no. 3. In 1907, Howard and Jennie were married and soon after, moved to Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY where Howard held a position teaching at a business college. By 1920 they had moved to Utica, Oneida Co., NY where Howard was a teacher (and employer) at a commercial school. By 1930, Howard and Jennie owned a home on Johnson Park (St.) in Utica. Howard was principal of the Excelsior School of Business. Although their home was in Utica, both Howard and Jennie enjoyed spending time in Morehouse and kept a camp there, which they called "Lattice Lodge". They donated the beautiful light fixtures to the Morehouse Methodist Church (now the Morehouse Museum). Howard and Jennie never had children. He died in 1951 and she in 1963. They are both buried in the Morehouse Mountain Home Road Cemetery in the lower section known as the 'Remonda Cemetery'.
