BIOGRAPHY: Dates from California death index. Living in Livermore, Alameda, CA in 1930 DEATH: (Independent - Helena, Montana - Aug 31, 1935 page 3) FORMER HELENA MAN KILLED IN CAVE-IN - Oakland, Calif., Aug. 30.—(IP)— The cave-in which entombed three men in the Broadway low level tunnel through the Berkeley hills here was placed under investigation today by a joint highway district No. 13 and separately by the U. S. bureau of mines in cooperation with the state Industrial accident commission. Rescue workers meanwhile continued their slow and hazardous task of reaching the bodies of Rafe Houchin, Howard Davis, and Steve Beljan, who were trapped Wednesday night in the collapse of part of the roof of the $3,628,000 tunnel about 260 feet from the Oakland portal. The tunnel was being drilled for transit of vehicles from Alameda to Contra Costa county. Howard Davis, 24, Oakland, one of three men reported killed in the cave-in of the California highway tunnel, is a former Helena resident, the son of Mrs F. P Davis of Canyon Creek, it was revealed here yesterday. He has several relatives in the Helena area including a sister, Mrs. Albert Anders. Davis is survived by his widow and two small children, in addition to the relatives here.
