About Howard Dwaine (Duane) Stone
Howard D Stone, the son of Howard H and Marry Ellen (Green) Stone, was born March 6, 1872 in Greig, NY. The family moved to Wall Lake, IA in 1876, and in 1882 settled in Correctionville IA. Howard D attended school there, and worked in the carpenter trade which he learned from his father. During the 1890’s, he carried mail in a buggy from Correctionville to Rock Branch, IA, a distance of seven miles. On Apr 20, 1896 he married Anna Clara Castle at Sac City, IA.
In 1903, with three small children, they heard of a land promotion out west in Idaho. Howard D and Anna loaded up their children and belongings, and headed west on the Great Northern Railway. Anna’s sister, Nettie, and her husband, Chickie Smith, had already moved to Bonners Ferry, so they moved in with them until they could find a home of their own. They bought a small farm on the flats. This was located in the area of the present Boundary County Fair Grounds. It enabled the family to keep some animals, including a riding pony.
Howard D, a carpenter, built several homes around Bonners Ferry. In those days, everything was done by hand. There were no power tools. Howard D passed away April 7, 1922.
