About Hubert Johnson Marchant
son of Louisa A Wright and Gilbert J Marchant
Saved by: Haskell Funeral Home Printed in: The Lovell Chronicle Typed by: Lovell Cemetery
Hubert J. Marchant was born Dec. 22, 1880 at Peoa, Summit county, Utah, the eldest son of Gilbert J. and Louisa Wright Marchant. He attended the elementary school there.
When pioneering began in Canada in 1899, LDS authorities called some young men to accompany the families settling in that country. At the age of 18, he worked there for a year helping build a canal.
In September of 1900 Mr. Marchant brought his mother and the rest of the family to the Big Horn Basin to join his father and two brothers who had arrived in the spring. He was later appointed foreman for a mile of railroad work.
His pioneer experiences were varied. He was in the group that built the first wagon road to Yellowstone park, and again at Billings and points northeast. He freighted, surveyed, did ditch work and contract work throughout this area.
Mr. Marchant married Amanda Melvina Tippets in a Salt Lake LDS temple ceremony Oct. 5, 1904. Returning to Cowley, Mr. Marchant farmed near there for a few years and then began blacksmithing. He followed this occupation for 24 years. He served as town marshal and superintendent of the water plant for several years. He helped build the first Cowley church and was a member of the Ward choir and a ward teacher for many years. He was a counselor to the Elder's Quorum and was ordained a high priest in 1949.
At 65 he retired from work in the oil fields. Twice he was seriously injured in car accidents and spent his 71st birthday recovering from the last one.
In 1959 they moved to Lovell where they resided until this year.
He is survived by his wife, Amanda; three sons, Elloyd T. Marchant, Cedar City, Utah, Hubert T. of Thermopolis and Norman T. of Salt Lake; four daughters, Mrs. S.H. Jameson and Mrs. Loyd Van Buskirk of Powell, Mrs. Don Olsen and Mrs. Elmer Stevens of Lovell; two brothers, Vern of Idaho Falls and Charles ofCowley; two sisters, Mrs. Bob Crashley of Casper and Mrs. Erma Lindsay of Greybull; 33 grandchildren and 38 great-granchildren.
