About Hugh Gold, Grocer of London

  • Hugh Gold alias Gawith was a Grocer of London.
  • It was probably he who married at St Peter upon Cornhill, London to Anne Corkes 16th January 1575/76
  • The will of Hugh Gold alias Gawith was dated 28th April 1617 & was proved the same year. Hi executrix is his loving wife Anne and the overseer is "my sonne in law" Thomas Evelyn, the younger [who was married to Anne Gold, his daughter]
  • Hugh's widow Anne is often said to be the daughter of Thomas Notte [daughter of his daughter Anne Notte], but this is not even remotely possible as Thomas Notte only married his wife Elizabeth Olden in 1614 at the earliest as her previous husband died in 1613. Of their four children, Anne was the youngest, so could not have been born before 1617 & probably several years later. She was therefore probably not even born when her purported husband died, much less able to have a daughter who purchased Long Ditton in 1621/2
