Hugh Shields

Hugh was in the entertainment business and took the stage name Harold Shields, possibly after his brother Harry (Henry). He was very small in height but big in fun. He worked in comedy with Tommy Lorne, Bret Harte and George West at the Princess Theatre, often writing their material. Hugh never married.

On Hugh’s death certificate it records him, in the occupation section as, Variety Artiste (Retired).
It also records that he was Single.
His death was recorded in the District of New Kilpatrick.
Hugh died on 12/8/1939 at the age of 58 years.
His death was in Canniesburn Auxiliary Hospital, Bearsden, Glasgow.
Hugh’s usual residence was given as c/o Smith, 131 Gorbals Street, Glasgow.
His death was registered by his brother Francis Shields, his address was given as 180 Adelphi Street, Glasgow.

180 Aldelphi Street was where their mother Mary Ellen died in 1917.
The family home of her son Francis, and his wife Sarah.
