Hugo van Sittert (1953 – 2024)

Brief overview:

Hugo (71), a farmer who lived alone on his farm Bok se Puts, between Keimoes and Kakamas in the Northern Cape, was found murdered on Thursday 8th February 2024. He was bludgeoned over the head with a blunt object. Hugo had been assaulted on his farm four days prior to his murder.

Hugo's body was found on the neighbouring farm Bok se Dam, about 150 meters from the farm gate. "It looks like he may still be alive and trying to crawl," said Theo de Jager, chairman of the Southern Africa Agri-Initiative (Saai).

A suspect was arrested by the Keimoes police, who was seen driving around in Hugo's truck. The suspect took the police to a house where they seized a firearm. He was found in possession of a firearm and arrested on charges of illegal possession of a firearm. Another person caught in the bakkie and was arrested for possession of a possibly stolen vehicle.

The first suspect apparently worked for Hugo. He went to Hugo's house with a friend on the Sunday to demand his wages from him. "According to the suspect, Van Sittert apparently shot at them with a .22 rifle and one of the suspects was apparently wounded in his hand." After his arrest, the suspect gave clues to the police about where Van Sittert's body was supposed to be.
