About Humphrey Tarbutton
Burial record:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/89864581/humphrey-tarbutton
Born about 1794 in North Carolina. (Source: 1850 and 1860 US Censuses)
Migrated to Georgia by 1824. This estimate is based off of his father's participation in the 1827 Land Lottery in Georgia, which required 3 years in state residency.
Married Eley Lord on 19 JUN 1824 in Hall County, Georgia. (Source: Hall County, Georgia Marriage Records)
1830 US Census lists him living in Hall County, Georgia.
By 1840, he had moved his family to Cherokee County, Georgia.
Married Nancy Young on 10 DEC 1847 in Cherokee County, Georgia. (Source: Cherokee County, Georgia Marriage Books)
By 1849, he is living in militia district #1031. (Source: 1849 Georgia Tax Digest)
The 1850 and 1860 US Censuses list him as living in Cherokee County.
The militia district #1031 of 1849 and the 1860 census isolate his living in the Conns Creek area of Cherokee County, Georgia. This area is just NNE of Ball Ground.
My family passed down said that the Tarbuttons were wealthy, but the Civil War ruined Humphrey financially, and it is said he committed suicide. Please note, I have no documentation that substantiates this.
He is presumed to be buried in Four Mile Baptist Church Cemetery. I contacted this church, and they say it's unlikely their records will verify this, as they were poorly maintained. Humphrey does in fact have a daughter and a sister (Nancy Tarbutton Bozeman) in this cemetery, and he was living in this area at the time. He also had a brother named Ellsberry that lived in Cherokee County prior to 1850.
It is said the 'Tarbutton Apple' is named after this family, and was reportedly brought to Georgia by either Humphrey or his father Joseph Tarbutton, Jr.
