Killed in action aboard the USS South Dakota.

Because of his actions in World War II, the USS Chatelain was named after Hubert.

July 17, 1935 - Hubert enlists in US Navy at 18 years old. He lives with his sister Macey and her husband in New Orleans for six weeks waiting to be called. While in New Orleans he worked at Cloverland Dairy dipping ice cream for six weeks, lost the job and returned to Mansura where he lived with his mother, Lucille. Two weeks later, he was call by the Navy, stayed with Marcey for a few days and then left for the Naval Base at Norfolk.

August 7, 1939 - Hubert cancels National Insurance Policy of $1000 dated November 1 1935, to create a new $2000 policy with his mother and brother Beverly John listed as beneficiaries.

July 29, 1941 -Hubert discharged from US Navy after serving aboard USS Utah.

August 6, 1941 - Hubert re-enlists at Puget Sound, Washington.

August 29, 1941 - Hubert is on leave in Mansura and pays his insurance bill.

October 1, 1941- Hubert increases his National Service Life Insurance policy from $2000 to $3000, naming Lucille (mother) and Beverly John (brother) as beneficiaries, who both reside in Mansura, Louisiana. Hubert is aboard the USS South Dakota.

Jan 16, 1942 - Hubert is in New York, NY, Pier 92, W. 52nd St. and requests by letter a copy of his insurance policy.

May 1, 1942 - Hubert applies for another life insurance policy in amount of $4000, again naming Lucille, who still resides in Mansura and Beverly John who resides at 1133 Prytania St., New Orleans near his father Oscar.

September 3, 1942 - Beverly John Chatelain (Hubert's brother) joins US Marines Corps.

October 26, 1942 - Hubert killed in action aboard USS Dakota.
