About Hyrum Alexander Dustin

The above photo was found on Family Search.org and depicts Hyrum Nephi Dustin and his children, including, back row: Hyrum Alexander and Julia Alnora; center row: Seth Bechies, Hyrum Nephi, (father) and Hannah Rebecca; front row: James Levi, and Vilda Dustin. Since Hyrum's wife, Rebecca Malinda Stevens Dustin, was not shown in the photo, it was probably taken after her death in 1902. Hyrum Nephi and his wife, Rebecca Malinda were cousins, since he was the son of Seth Dustin, and Rebecca Malinda was the daughter of Rebecca Welker and Alexander Stevens. Rebecca Welker's brother, John, was the husband of Roxana Mahala Dustin, Seth Dustin's sister.

In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for Garden City Village, Rich County, Utah, Hyrum was 3 years old and living with his parents and brother, who were listed in the census record as follows: Hyrum Nephi Dustin, 24, and Rebecca Malinda Dustin, 21, Hyrum, 3, and Seth, 11 months old. Hyrum Nephi was working as a laborer.

In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Garden, Rich, Utah, Hyrum Alexander Dustin, was 23 years old and was living with his parents and siblings who were listed as follows in the census record: Nephi, 44, Rebecca M., 41, Hyrum A., 23, Seth C., 20, James C., 17, Hannah R., 14, Julia A., 10, and Vilda, 9 years old. His parents had been married for 25 years, had given birth to 7 children, 6 of whom sere still living. Hyrum Nephi was working as a farmer and his sons Hyrum Alexander and Seth were working as farm laborers.

Living nearby was Hyrum Nephi Dustin's younger brother,, Levi Jerome Dustin, 36, with his wife Jane, 38, and their children, Ethel J., 12, Elizabeth D., 10, Ester H., 8, Levi A., 6, Cecilia E., 4, and Edna S. 2 years old. Levi's mother, Hannah Loveland Dustin, had died when he was just a young boy, and he went to live with his aunt, Roxana Mahala Dustin Welker, and uncle, John Welker. Around the same time, Hyrum Nephi wife, Rebecca Malinda Stevens Dustin, had also lost her mother, Rebecca Welker Stevens, at a very young age after he birth of her 5th child, and her daughter, Rebecca Malinda Stevens, was also sent to live her aunt and uncle, Roxana Mahalia Dustin Welker and John Welker in Bloomington, Bear Lake County, Idaho. They were listed there in the 1880 census record.

Sadly, just two years later, Hyrum Alexander Dustin's mother, Rebecca Malinda Stevens Dustin, passed away in 1902 at the relatively young age of just 44 years old. I do not know the cause of her death, however.

In the 1910 census for Garden City, Utah, Hyrum Alexander, 33, was living with his 54-year old widower father, Hyrum Nephi, 54, and brother James, 27, and sister, Vilda, 19, along with married sister, Hannah R. Dustin Hall, 23, and her husband Earl S. Hall, 36, and their daughters, Elizabeth M., 3, and Luella, 1 year, 5 months old. Hannah and Earl had been married for 4 years. Hyrum Nephi was still working as a farmer, Hyrum Alexander and brother James were working as laborers doing odd jobs, and Earl S. Hall was working as a sheep hearder.

When Hyrum Alexander Dustin completed his U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card on September 12, 1918, in Rich County, Utah, he described himself as being of medium height, slender build, with blue eyes and brown hair. He was 41 years old, having been born November 6, 1876, and was living in Garden City, Rich County, Utah, and working as a farmer. He listed the name of his father as the person who would always know his address.

In the 1920 census for Randolph, Rich County, Utah, Hyrum Alexander Dustin, 43, was living with his brother, Seth B. Dustin, 40, and his wife, Nina Sarah Mortensen Dustin, 34, and their children: Nephi N., 11, Theola C., 9, and Juanita, 6 years old. Seth owned his own home which was located on 1st East Street. His wife, Nina's father was Swedish and her mother was Danish. Seth was working as a U.S. mail contractor and Hyrum was working as a driver of the U.S. Stage. Seth and Nina had married March 6, 1907, in Bear Lake County, Idaho.

By the 1930 census, Hyrum Alexander, 53, was living with his father Hyrum Nephi, 74, in Garden City, Utah, on the State Highway Road. Hyrum Alexander was still single, so it appears he never married nor had any children. Father and son were both still working as farmers. The following year, Hyrum Alexander's father, Hyrum Nephi Dustin, passed away at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 4 days old on July 31, 1931, from old age according to his Utah Death Certificate. He was buried in the Garden City Cemetery with his wife, Rebecca Malinda, who had died 31 years earlier.

Hyrum Alexander Dustin passed away at the age of 93 years old on April 24, 1970, and was also buried in the Garden City Cemetery where his parents were buried.
