About Hywel "Sais" (The English-Speaker) ap Rhys, arglwydd of Sanclêr

Serving twice at the court of Henry II, once as a child hostage and once again later as an emissary, he became fluent in English; hence his nickname, "Sais," meaning "English speaker." (It can also mean "English" -- it is the Welsh for "Saxon.")

See Darrell Wolcott, http://www.ancientwalesstudies.org/id187.html, "The Children of Lord Rhys," for untangling of these lines. (April 21, 2016, Anne Brannen, curator)
