As written by his sister Elize Tordoff: Ian was I think thuggish and largely ignored by his sisters. He played rugby (well), quarreled with Maureen and I suspect with his friends got up to a certain amount of mischief. I don’t think he really applied himself at school – fudges his age and joined the Royal Navy as a ordinary seaman and later became an Able Seaman, he was present at the fall of Singapore.
