Ian (15) was shot dead by police when they mistook the Isuzu double-cab bakkie for a stolen Colt bakkie, which a family member, Piet van Dyk (22) was driving.
Although not a farm attack, the van Dyk family live on a farm on Saaihoek Road, and Ian lived with his grandmother in a house on the same farm. Piet decided to drive past their turn off in order to shake off their pursuers. Frik van Dyk, Piet's father said, "I taught them you don't stop, even if there are blue lights. You read every day about robbers with blue lights who pull people off the road. We live on a farm and we must be even more careful."
The Independent Complaints Directorate investigated a murder charge against the two policemen who shot and killed Ian. Commissioner Johanna Nkomo, the station commissioner of the Witbank police also ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The outcome is unknown.
