TITLES: Brenin of Glamorgan.

LIVING: 1080-1093. (Bartrum, Welsh Genealogies 300-1400, vol. 8 p. 542)

PROPERTY: Lord of Glamorgan. (Evans, British Genealogist, book 8 p. H21)

REMARKS: Some sources refer to him as King of Glamorgan. The term King can be misleading. In Wales till the middle of the 12th century individuals were styled 'Brenin' meaning chief or high one, and 'Arglwydd' meaning lord or master.
REMARKS: "He was rejected as Sovereign of his countrymen on the death of his father in 1030, owing to his violent and headstrong disposition, and his uncle Hywel was elected instead; on whose death in 1043, however he succeeded to the throne. In 1088 he waged war against Rhys ap Tewdwr, King of Deheubarth, or South Wales, in conjuction with Einion ap Collwyn; and the latter having got from England the aid of Robert Fitzhamon, and twelve other Knights, they entirely defeated him at the battle of Hirwaun Wrgant (the long mountain meadow of Gwrgant) on the borders of Brecknockshire. A quarrel between the two chieftains immediatedly after induced Einion to recall the Normans, who were on their return, and induced them to wrest the territory of Glamorgan from its Prince. They therefore made their attack, chased Iestyn out of the country, who crossed the Bristol Channel, and fled to Glastonbury, thence to Bath, and ultimately to the Monastery of Llangenys in Monmouthshire where he died." (Dwnn, Heraldic Visitations of Wales, vol. 1 p. 190 fn. 7)

KINSHIP: Bartrum's 'Welsh Genealogies 300-1400' volume 8 page 542 does not state to which wife he belongs.

KINSHIP: Williams' ' Llyfr Baglan' page 298 makes him the son of Nest ferch Gwyn.

KINSHIP: Thomas' 'Golden Grove MS' book 17 page N2010 makes him the son of Nest ferch Gwyn

KINSHIP: He is placed in the family of Nest ferch Gwyn until further research proves otherwise.
KINSHIP: Lloyd's 'History of the Princes, the Lords Marcher and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog' volume 6 page 417 gives him sons named Morgan who died in infancy and Rhys, Lord of Soflen.

KINSHIP: Evans' 'British Genealogist' book 5 page E9 gives him a son named Rhydderch.

KINSHIP: Thomas' 'Golden Grove MS' book 7 page D893 omits this generation from the name string.

KINSHIP: Thomas' 'Golden Grove MS' book 17 page N2041 gives him additional sons by Constance "Wen" ferch Cadwgon named Llywarch and Rhydderch. Rhydderch was the son of Iestyn ab Owain.

MARRIAGE: Nicholas, Annals and Antiquities of the Counties and County Families of Wales' volume 2 page 621 states he married Angharad ferch Elystan "Glodrydd", but he married a granddaughter of Elystan "Glodrydd".
