Obituary transcribed by Dena Gray-Fisher, source: The Roland Record, Roland, Story County, Iowa, September 2, 1920 "PIONEER LAID TO REST
Story County Early Pioneer Laid to Rest Sunday
Mrs. Inger Ritland, one of Story county's early pioneers, who passed away last Wednesday at the home of her son, Osmund Ritland, south of McCallsburg, was buried Sunday from Bergen church. Rev. G. Smedal, who had been her friend and pastor for the past twenty-five years, performed the last sad rites.
Inter Ritland was born on July 3, 1835, in Skaanevik, Norway, and died on August 25, 1920, being 85 years old at the time of her death.
In the year 1857 together with her parents she immigrated to this county coming direct to Story county. On February 7, 1866, she was united in marriage to Jens Ritland by Rev. Amlund of Story City. Soon after this event they moved to the Ritland homestead northwest of Roland, where she continued to live up to about a year ago. On February 7, 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Ritland celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. A year later Mr. Ritland died, and since that time she has made her home with ther children.
Mrs. Ritland leaves to mourn her death seven children, who were all present at the funeral. They are Olaus Ritland, Radcliffe; Mrs. Belle Logan, Ada, Minn.; B. J. Ritland, McCallsburg; Mrs. Julia Johnson, Randall; Mrs. Louise Williamson, Grafton, N. D.; Osmund Ritland, McCallsburg; Louis Ritland, Roland. She also leaves three brothers, S. O., M. and Ole Hegland.
With the death of Mrs. Ritland there closed a long, busy and useful life and she died the way she lived, honored, trusted and loved. None entered her home without a warm welcome nor left without a feeling of warmth of a genuine hospitality, so characteristic of her ancestry. Sickness did not destroy the charms of a kind indulgent disposition, nor the diminish her unselfish solicitude for her friends and loved ones. Early in her life she joined the Bergen Lutheran church and attended the services regular whenever her health would permit. She was a liberal contributor to the church and to many charity organizations."
