About Ino Alvo

I was born in 1930 in Thessaloniki, city that was restored to Greece in 1912 by a swift

military action of the then Greek prime minister Eleftherios Venizelos.

Throughout centuries, this city was ruled by the Ottoman Turks who conquered it from the Byzantines. Circa 1500 many Jews who were expelled from Spain found refuge there.

Throughout the ages, the population of the city was mainly Turk, Greek and Jewish (roughly in equal proportions).

When I was 4, my father decided to move the head office of his business to Athens (leaving a branch office in Thessaloniki), We therefore moved to Athens. I went to school and all went well until the Italians in 1940 declared war to Greece. Some months later, having been beaten by the Greeks in the battlefields, they asked Hitler's Germans to help with their crushing might. Soon it was over, and the Germans and Italians occupied Greece for 3 1/2 years.

The Germans sent Thessalonki's entire population of 50,000 Jews to the death camps. Only 2000 returned.

Then, after Italy's collapse, the Germans took control of Athens and the other cities which had been in Italy's custody, and ordered the Jews to assemble so that they could round them up and send them to the Polish camps of extermination.

My father decided to hide the members of his family in various friendly homes. The Greek population helped us hide and provided us with provisions and money. But on a fatal day of July 1944, my father was caught ans sent to Auschwitz, from where he never returned. My mother, my 3 sisters and myself managed to survive with the help of the Greek Christial population until the liberation on October 12th, 1944. After the liberation, I held several miscellaneous jobs until I decided to reopen my father's business (he was a sales agent of American auto parts manufacturers). Although very young in age, I found my father's papers which helped me contact the Americans as well as the local clientele. I have done this successfully until 1951 when my whole family decided to immigrate to Israel.

After serving in the Israeli Army, I started the same business in Israel. Despite the difficulties I managed to succeed, being the first to import auto parts from Japan, and obtained agencies in the same industry from German, Britrish, and French firms.

In 1962 I agreed to form a partnership with my brother-in-law Shlomo Hassid and we established the company General Auto Parts Distributing Ltd. in Tel Aviv.

We added as our source of merchandise the countries Brazil, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and China.

40 years later we had to finally retire and we sold the company as a going concern.

Today I have a multitude of occupations, I am very active in the Internet, being inter alia an editor

in the Greek internet site
