About Irene Henderson

Irene was born a twin. These two babies born in mid winter in a little hospital in Pounawea, were given brandy by the "nurse" taking care of them, and her twin sister died. Their family life was very poor. Alex'r was a healthy young man who was an Anzac at Gallipoli in the first world war, and he was injured which evolved into TB of the bone. This kept him sick for the rest of his life. He had many times in hospital, and never really worked again. This resulted in the Laughton family moving home often and living in very poor circumstances. Irene and Laurie married in Dunedin then very soon moved to Invercargill. There they had a home where all were welcome. They had thousands of visitors and showed hospitality and kindness to all they met. They were committed to serving God in every part of their lives and this resulted in their being highly respected, loved even in their broader community. When Laurie died, they were about to move to Australia to join their two daughters, and so Irene moved, bringing her Mum - Helen Laughton "Nanna" with her. Even in Australian Irene's love and care for others made her very much loved.
