About Irene Wilson

I was born in a small town in Sumter, South Carolina on September 17, 1949, to Eugene Wilson Sr. and Christine (Burroughs) Green at Tuomey Hospital. I was one of fifteen (15) children; I was the eighth living child of my parents. I had 7 biological sisters and 3 brothers in this order, Mary Jane, Edward, Melvin, Lucille, Ethel, Rosa Lee, Annie Ruth, Louise, Eugene Jr. Irene (Me), and Deloris. (4 children died in childbirth).

I started Stone Hill Elementary School in September 1956, Stone Hill Elementary School located at Webb Street in Sumter, South Carolina. The school was about ½ miles from my home. The school was segregated at that time. I had all-black teachers. I grew up on Beck Street and was able to walk to school with my sisters and brother. Rain or shine we walked to and from school.

I had enjoyed school; I did reasonably well in school. We didn’t get much help with our homework from anyone in the family. Our parents weren’t educated enough to help us with any can of assistance. Our sisters had their children to care for or perhaps they didn’t realize we needed help!

I graduated from Stone Hill Elementary to the 7th grade at Bates Junior High School. It was a big adjustment from elementary school. I was referred to a tomboy because I climbed trees, and played baseball and football with the other children in the neighborhood.

Leaving Sumter at age 15 (1964 or 1965) was very hard for me; Leaving behind the entire family I loved.
I attended Morris High School in the Bronx. It was a very large school mostly black and Hispanic students. I left Morris High School in the 9th grade.

In 1967 I attended The Job Corp in Poland Spring, Maine where I studied to become a psychiatric nursing aide. After graduating from Job Corp. at 17 years old, I moved to Boston to work. I attended Northeastern University to further my education.

I Moved back to Bronx, NY, and attended Lehman College. Degree in Social Work; i received my Master's degree in Guidance Counselor.
