SAR (Sons of American Revolution) application in 1960 from a descendant of John Alford states essentially: 1774 Dec 5 - John Alford weaver contributed to the relief of the patriots of Boston (1) 1 pr shoe buckles; (2) 1 qt wiskey (3) a pair compasses (4) 3 dozen buttons.. 1776-1782 - During the War of the Revolution, the membership of the old Peaked Mountain Church at Cross Keys of Rockingham County, Va. served three companies; the membership that lived in the Mill Creek and William's Valleys first served in Capt. Thos. Hewitt's Company. Among those who served besides, John Alford, were George, John, and Nathan and Stephen Houston; Robert and James Hook; Robert and James Scott; James Gilliland, John Taylor, William Davidson and William Heney.
