Isaac Adkins, born February 17, 1790 in Montgomery County, Virginia, to Hezekiah and Mary (Levon) Adkins, is my 5th great-grandfather. As a boy, Isaac moved from Montgomery/Giles County, Virginia, to what is today Wayne County, (West) Virginia. He married Elizabeth Adkins on April 6, 1811. Elizabeth was born about 1792, the daughter of Jacob and Phoebe (Bradshaw) Adkins. Isaac and Elizabeth were the parents of: Henry Adkins, born about 1811; Isaac Adkins, Jr., born about 1815...; Charles Adkins, born about 1820; Lydia Evaline Adkins, born 1824; and Isaiah Adkins, born about 1825. In the 1820s, Isaac left Wayne County and settled across the Guyandotte River from the mouth of Big Harts Creek ("Harts Bottom") in what was then Cabell, later Logan, County, Virginia. Prior to his death, Isaac constituted one of Logan County's largest slave owners. A popular river crossing at Harts was named in his honor (Isaac Adkins Shoals). One November 17, 1854, Isaac died peacefully with his hunting dog while resting under a tree on Isaac Adkins Branch. He was buried on the hill behind his home. His widow, Elizabeth, remarried to Martin Dalton on June 6, 1858. Isaac's oldest son, Henry, inherited the home-place at Harts and sold much of it to his first cousin, Aaron J. Adkins. Elizabeth, who did not remain married to Mr. Dalton for long, died about 1885 and was buried near her first husband. djlongoria originally shared this on 18 May 2014
