Studied Accounting in Transvaal University, Johannesburg and then joined the South African Army.
Barney was stationed in London from 1917 - 1919, he was mustered out in 1919 and decided to travel to the US rather than return home. He arrived from Liverpool on the White Star liner SS Baltic in November 1900 and moved in with sister Anne and David (Dave) Kessler (childless) who were then living in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn.
Barney was a compulsive gambler whose debts had caused his family considerable anguish. . He was the 2nd of 11 surviving children of Benjamin and Celia Mailer of Lithuania - they had lived in Johannesburg, South Africa since emigrating from Lithuania in 1900, when Barney was nine years old. Barney met Fan Schneider.
In the 1920 Census he is indexed as Isaac Masler and/or Marler.
