Isaac Garrison

Isaac was born about 1792/96 based on census records (despite his age as given in his death record and gravestone inscription).* He married Elizabeth Jackson on 31 July 1817 in Salem Co., NJ. He died at Unionville (now called Aura), Gloucester Co., NJ.

Isaac and Elizabeth lived and farmed on a 43-acre tract at Unionville conveyed to Isaac in 1835 by Elizabeth's father, John Jackson. This land was part of Elizabeth's grandfather Joseph Jackson's 727-acre purchase in 1772. It adjoined John Jackson's homestead farm, which was directly to the east, both being on the north side of present-day Woodstown-Glassboro Road/Whig Lane/County Route 619. Both farms were transected by present-day Ewan-Aura Road/Clem's Run/County Route 523. The Garrison property included 10 acres on the north side of the latter road, which Isaac conveyed to his son Jonathan in 1870.

Note: Isaac's death record gives his death date as April 1, 1875, and his death was reported in the 30 June 1875 Woodbury Constitution (see image) as having occurred on the 1st of April last. His gravestone inscription, however, gives the year as 1874. Either the gravestone inscription is incorrect, or two other primary sources reported the death a year late.

• As to Isaac's birth year, he is listed as aged 30-39 in the 1830 Census, as aged 40-49 in the 1840 Census, as aged 54 in the 1850 Census, as aged 68 in the 1860 Census, and as aged 75 in the 1870 Census. This puts his birth at about 1792-1796. However, his newspaper death notice gives his age at death as 87, which puts his birth in about 1787/88; and his gravestone gives his age as 92 years, which would put his birth at about 1782. The census references are much more consistent and therefore seem more reliable.
