About Isaac Rufus Gilbert
Isaac Rufus Gilbert was the son of Eli E. Gilbert (1837–1861), a casualty of the American Civil War, and Susanna Abigail Place (1840-1898). He was born in Jefferson County, Illinois. He married Mary Dare (1861-1936) in 1879 in Jefferson County, Illinois.
He was a laborer in the lead mines and killed in an MR & BT (Mississippi River & Bonne Terre) Line railroad accident at the Rivermines Depot in St. Francois County, Missouri, in 1915, two months shy of his 56th birthday. He is buried at the Elvins Cemetery. Following his death, his family moved to Granite City, Illinois. His wife Mary Dare Gilbert died there in 1936 and is buried in Granite City's St. John's Cemetery.
