Scientist. War of 1812 Soldier. He was born a Quaker. Because of his military service in the War of 1812, Isaac Lea lost his birthright membership in the Society of Friends. He was a private in the 7th Company of the 24th Pennsylvania Militia. On March 8, 1821, he married Frances Anne Carey, daughter of Mathew Carey, the Philadelphia publisher. In the first quarter of the 19th century, the company of Isaac Lea and Henry Charles Carey, his brother-in-law, was the leading publishing house in America. Carey and Lea was the American publisher of Sir Walter Scott and the publisher of James Fenimore Cooper. In addition to his literary work, Lea was a conchologist and wrote extensively about shellfish. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society and the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
