About Isaac Nichols

R. B. Nichol Notes: This Isaac Nichols/Nicolls is listed in the Caroline County, MD Tax Assessment of 1783 as "Isaac Nicolls, of Benjamin" apparently to differentiate him from Isaac Nichols, Sr. and Jr., son and grandson of John Nicoll(s), Sr., who were also in the county at the time. This is presumably the same Isaac Nichols who posted a marriage bond to wed Dolly Cole in Guilford Co., NC, on 14 Aug 1787; Dolly was daughter of George Cole of Dorchester Co., and is mentioned in his 1792 will as "Wife of Isaac Nichols of Guilford Co., NC." On 22 Nov 1796 this same Isaac Nichols, representing the Deep River settlement of Nicholites living in Guilford Co., bought land for a Nicholite meeting house from Isaac Odle [Odell]; this Nicholite connection firmly associates him with Caroline/Dorchester Counties, MD, where the sect got its start. According to published sources available to Mary Browning, a professional genealogist in Guilford Co., the Guilford Co. court of pleas & quarter sessions granted "Daughty," widow of Isaac "Nichole" administration of his estate in August, 1813. Censuses of 1800 and 1810 indicate that this household included three daughters and one son, the youngest, all born before 1800.

Publication: Browning, Mary A./7 Oct 2008 Text: Bob, CONT CONT Well, I have a note from Guilford Co. court of pleas & quarter sessions that administration was granted "Dauty" (which I guess is Dolly) Nichols (sic) widow of Isaac Nichole (sic) in Aug. 1813. Bond was secured by Samuel Horney and James "Poller." Inventory of the estate was returned in Nov. and a years provisions were granted to the widow. This in Guilford Co. Court records, 4th volume, pp. 119, 136. CONT CONT Usually these matters came into court in the next sessions following the death, so isaac probably died between May and August 1813. CONT CONT The Nicholites' identity as a group evaporated quickly here for unknown reasons. We do know about where the meeting house was, through the efforts of Jack L. Perdue (now deceased unforunately) who took the trouble to investigate. The High Point Library NC collection has a file with the location of the site. I think there are also copies of all Dr. Carroll's articles. CONT CONT 1800 census, p. 687: Isaac Nichols: 1 white male 16-26, 3 white females under 10, 1 white female 10-16, 1 white female 26-45. (Living between Elizabeth Lineger and Isaac Odell.) CONT 1810 census, p. 949, Isaac "Nickolos": 1 white male under 10, 1 white male 45+, 2 white females 10-16, 1 white female 16-26, 1 white female 26-45.. CONT CONT These are from [ublished records; it wouldn't hurt to look on the originals to check for accuracy. CONT CONT I think you'd have a difficult time finding anything else about the Nichols name, at least in the time frame. There were some Nichols brides in the 1820s & '30s.. There was a Nicholson at about the same time, but that's a different story. CONT CONT Mary Note: Mary A. Browning CONT Professional genealogist CONT P.O.
