Isaac Mitten Stewart

Isaac Mitton Stewart of Midway, Utah, and Indian Wells, California, passed away at his Indian Wells home on Friday December 14, 1990. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah December 30, 1904, son of Charles Biekley and Katherine (Romney) Stewart. Married June Woodruff on December 16, 1927 in Washington D.C.; later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Survived by his wife and children, Isaac Mitton Jr., Midway; Charles Owen, Los Altos, California; June (Mrs. Gary Miller), Yuba City, California; Helen Katherine (Mrs. Richard B. Bennett) Indio, California; Wilford Romney, Indian Wells, California; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, George R., Palm Desert California; Romney, Escondido, California; and sister, Josephine Howells, Rancho Mirage, California

Attended UCLA, 1923-24, J.D., with honors George Washington University, 1928.

Member of Utah State Bar Association, and District of Columbia Bar, also the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. Administrative assistant to the honorable Reed Smoot, U.S. Senator from the State of Utah, 1928-32. Special assistant, U.S. Senate Finance Committee, 1926-32; Practiced law, Washington D.C., 1933-36.

He was actively involved in the Manhattan Project (Development of the Atomic Bomb); Vice president, Union Carbide Corp., 1949-67; consultant, 1967-81; director and officer of various corporations; director Consolidated Freightways, Inc., 1958-83, consultant, 1983-84. Bonneville International.

Owner, Stewart Ranch, Kamas, Utah; President Salt Lake (Mormon) Tabernacle Choir, 1962-75. One of the first official observers to the United Nations for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Member of the United States Senate Advisory Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce. Chairman of Business and Industry Committee of the National Citizens Commission on International Cooperation. Recipient of the George Washington University Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in Law and Public Service, 1965. Member of the American Pioneer Trails Assoc., Inc. (member of advisory council); American Mothers Committee, Inc. (Advisory Board). Phi Alpha Delta. Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was one of the first members of the Indian Wells Country Club in Indian Wells, California.

Family services will be held at a later date, and interment will be in the Francis, Utah Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation at 2323 No. Mayfair Road, Rd. L-30, Milwaukee, Wisc. 53226, in his memory.
